The Transformation of Health Clubs
All information below comes from IHRSA, The Global Health & Fitness Association
As of July 1, 2021, 22% of health and fitness clubs closed their doors for good. 1 out of 5 local gyms are gone forever due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Here are a few other startling statistics:
- 39% of California health clubs permanently closed.
- Throughout the pandemic, gym and studio usage decreased by over 50%.
- The fitness industry lost $29.2 billion in revenue in the time frame of March 2020 through June 2021.
Here at Power Train Sports & Fitness, we believe that both fitness and healthy lifestyle choices are necessary to staying healthy. IRSHA delivered a statement that vouches for why a gym membership could be life-saving:
- Physical activity is associated with a 31% lower risk of a community-acquired infection and 37% lower risk of infectious disease death.
Not only is the workout itself important, but the community that comes with it is just as beneficial to a holistic lifestyle. We were meant to do our lives in relationships with others. During the pandemic, 36% of people stated that they missed their gym’s sense of community and 42% missed working out with others.
One thing that Power Train is extremely proud of is the sense of community at each one of our locations. Most people tend to train at the same time each day during the week, resulting in workouts that consist of the same people. Our clients inevitably form connections and friendships. One client stated, “I met one of my best friends at Power Train – and I’m sure I’m not the only one. It makes coming to train that much more enjoyable.” IRSHA stated that, “Endorphins released during fitness help us bond to others, and help strengthen ties to individuals we’re not related to—e.g., team mates—which helps us build extended families and important social networks.”
Fitness can save people money in the long run. A minor gym membership cost now vs. major medical bills down the road – take your pick. 8 in 10 of the most expensive medical conditions are more likely to occur in the inactive population. Americans spend $3 trillion tending to existing health issues, yet only $60 billion—0.2%—on preventative healthcare measures such as physical activity and lifestyle behaviors.
Today, Power Train is still going strong – 17 locations and growing. We have had our fair share of ups and downs, struggles, challenges, and setbacks since March of 2020, but we have stayed resilient. With that being said, THANK YOU. Thank you for being a loyal customer. Thank you for sticking with us. Thank you for believing in Power Train. Thank you for putting your health as a top priority.
